A brand new 2012 Consumer Reports Magazine survey once again touts the Hoover WindTunnel T-Series as the best vacuum for pet hair in the moderately priced (under $150) category. Consumer Reports found the Hoover WindTunnel Pet UH30310, and it’s slightly lower-priced cousin, the Hoover WindTunnel UH30300, “cleaned carpets impressively and sucked up pet hair superbly.”
The latest recommendations add to the growing list of Hoover WindTunnel vacuum cleaners that both Consumer Reports and actual pet owners are saying make them the best value in moderately price pet vacuums.
Actual pet vacuum owners were impressed by the Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Pet Upright Vacuum’s suction and ease of use:
“A great vacuum cleaner for sucking up the cat hair we have all over the house. Our rugs look much cleaner than they did when we were using the old Panasonic vacuum cleaner. Great suction.” — Gary C.
“We bought this vacuum because one of our dogs sheds like crazy and we wanted to decrease the amount that stays in the carpet. So far so good! I would recommend this one!” –Jennifer P.

In December 2009, Consumer Reports Magazine did testing to find the best vacuum for pet hair and, for it’s price, the Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Edition (Bagged, U5491900) came out on top. Consumer Reports said the Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Edition was “excellent on carpets as well as pet hair and very good or better at cleaning bare floors.”
The bad news is the Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Edition is being phased out (for a limited time, you can still get a good deal on one here, however.) The good news is that Hoover has recently introduced the Hoover WindTunnel T Series UH70210, which, based on actual user reviews, appears to be the equal of the Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Edition. Here’s a quick video preview of the new Hoover Pet Rewind:
The new Hoover WindTunnel Pet Rewind Upright pet vacuum features a five-position carpet height adjustment, automatic cord rewind, powerful suction and a carbon filter to help absorb musty pet odors.
A few actual user reviews of the Hoover WindTunnel Pet Rewind Upright T Series:
“We knew we needed something that would do well for long cat hair and long dog hair, but would also be good for keeping allergies at bay. We compared the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser, Bissell Healthy Home, Dyson Animal, and this Hoover Pet Rewind. I love the enormous amount of suction on this vacuum…it’s awesome to see it do it’s job. It’s got a bazillion features that are awesome, all the attachments for getting pet hair off furniture are great, the hose is good length and the handle folds down for easy storage. The BEST part about this vacuum is it came with a reusable HEPA filter…” –T.C.
“I cannot say enough great things about this vacuum. It is easy to use, very cool looking, and works like a champ. It picked up amazing amounts of dirt and pet hair in just one pass. We have 3 cats, 1 dog, and several black background area rugs, so you can imagine we fight the constant battle against pet hair. I would easily compare this vacuum to a Dyson, and if you own pets, this is an absolute must-have item. Highly recommend!” –P. Burk

The Dyson DC25 Animal Vacuum Cleaner combines Dyson’s signature “ball” technology (great for maneuvering around corners) with a motorized brushbar and powerful bristles to tackle even the most stubborn pet hair problems. The unit also includes a certified asthma-friendly HEPA filter.
With a list price of $559 (I’ve consistently found the best deal here), the Dyson DC 25 Animal might seem like a bit more vacuum than you need if all you’re planning to do is pick up pet hair. But the combination of excellent reviews, innovative technology and superior durability (the Dyson DC25 comes with a five-year warranty) make the Dyson DC25 Animal Ball a vacuum cleaner every pet owner should consider.
Actual users give the Dyson DC25 many five-star ratings:
“I’ve owned just about every top rated vacuum that has been made. I was never satisfied, mostly because they were too heavy, or the animal hair was blown about, rather than sucked up…I have a cat and a dog, and there is lots of shedding hair, all the time…When I saw the DC25 Animal, I decided to spend the money hoping that this vacuum would do the job. It has lived up to my wildest dreams, it is wonderfully easy to handle…I had no problem carrying it upstairs.
I love that with this vacuum I don’t need to select different heights, it goes from floor to carpet to floor. I was even able to clean the dogs bed without the wand attachment…Most important, THIS VACUUM SUCKS, but in a good way!!” –V. Casdia

The Bissell Pet Hair Eraser comes in a variety of sizes, prices and features. At the low end is the inexpensive ($29.99), but very favorably reviewed Bissell corded handheld 33A1. (See reviews and more details here.) Also available are the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Canister Vacuum, Bissell Lift-Off Upright and Bissell Dual-Cyclonic Upright 3920. For the purposes of this overview, I’ll focus on the Dual-Cyclonic 3920, which seems to be not only the most popular Pet Hair Eraser, but also has a wide variety of actual user reviews.
The Bissell Dual-Cyclonic 3920 features a unique “pet contour tool” designed to effectively get to dirt and hair trapped in problem areas such as stairs, curved furniture, etc. Other features include a bagless, easy-to-empty dirt container, a HEPA media filter, 14-foot hose and 35-foot power cord.
Out of the box, many actual users like their Bissell Pet Hair Eraser 3920:
“This is a pretty excellent vacuum. I have a few cocker spaniels and was amazed at the pet hair the my older vacuum left behind. The price is really good also.” –J.D.
“I love this vacuum! To write a fair review, I vacuumed with my old vacuum yesterday and then with the Pet Hair Eraser today. Yuck! I couldn’t believe the stuff this vacuum picked up. As a matter of fact, I keep going over and over the same room, just to see how long it will take before I’m satisfied that the carpets are relatively clean. Not only did it pick up some pet hair (apparently my old vacuum did okay with that aspect), but the dirt and grime that my old vacuum left behind.” –M. Fordy
On the other hand, quite a few actual users have mixed opinions about the Pet Hair Eraser:
“The biggest drawback is the frequency of clogs in the upper dirt collection area. I’ve had to resort to using a plastic chopstick to poke around and dislodge the clogs after each and every use. Having to vacuum the outside of the vacuum cleaner when you’re done emptying it is a little disheartening!
Edited to add: I had to come back and add that this product is not durable or reliable. The power cord frayed dangerously in normal use/storage conditions, and the motor went after just over 18 months.” –MMC
And a more detailed, not-so-positive review of the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser 3920:
“I have had my Pet Hair Eraser for a little over a year now and am shopping for a new vacuum cleaner again. No, it is not broken. However, there are several reasons why I strongly dislike using this pet vacuum:
1. The design causes a constantly recurring problem of clogging where the hose meets the console. It clogs up in the upper chamber and the L-shaped area at top of hose. This problem is sooooo frustrating and occurs so often that it makes vacuuming a very unpleasant chore. When it gets clogged up in the upper chamber you have to take the hose off and the canister out in order to access the clog. Even then it is very hard to get to and ends up creating a terrible mess spreading dirt all over the outside of the machine as well as the surrounding floor area. I have learned to spread newspapers out each time before working on clearing up the clog. You may think this is because I let the canister get too full before emptying it, but just the opposite. I never let it get more than 1/4 full before emptying it. The backup occurs even if the canister is almost empty. Just a bad design.
2. HEAVY and cumbersome for vacuuming stairs. Very hard to maneuver on the carpeted stairs.
3. The canister has to be emptied too often. Because I try to eliminate anything that might encourage clogging up the system, I empty the canister as soon as it looks like it is backing up which is pretty much when it gets to 1/4 full…. and it isn’t all that big. So I empty it many times each time I vacuum my house…. which is quite often.
4. The roller brush had to be replaced the 2nd week we had this vacuum cleaner as it had very fragile plastic end brackets that broke right away. So go ahead and add the cost of a replacement roller brush to your vacuum purchase price.
5. The attachment selection: I need an attachment that I can use on my kitchen floors and foyer. None of the included attachments are right for cleaning hard floors.” –T.J. West

Are you tired of pushing around a big old vacuum cleaner? Would you prefer to have someone else do it for you? Maybe it’s time to hire your own robot! The iRobot Roomba Pet Series 532 Vacuum Cleaning Robot is specially designed for pet owners. It’s engineered to clean up to three standard rooms on a single charge, comes with an extra set of easy-to-clean brushes and features a higher capacity sweeper bin to capture more pet hair.
The Irobot Roomba Pet Series is a bit more expensive than a traditional pet vacuum, but many users feel the extra expense is worth it:
“This thing is amazing, we run it almost everyday since getting it. And it continues to pick up hair and dust that I never would have known was there. It’s already working wonders for my allergies. The amazing thing was we received and ran the Roomba the same day our housekeepers came and did a thorough cleaning of the house. The Roomba still picked up an amazing amount of stuff…a long haired dog and short haired cat can accumulate quite a bit of fur! The cat is pretty sure the Roomba is a playmate and the dog is less terrified of it everyday. Do yourself a favor and get one!” –Brian G.
